Shanghai to Hangzhou by Train Which Stations to Choose
The rail ride between Shanghai and Hangzhou is only one part of the transfer. The better ticket is the one that connects the Shanghai hotel to the right Hangzhou arrival station and leaves enough usable time for West Lake, Lingyin, Longjing, or the next hotel check-in.
The best arrival depends on what happens after the train.
Hangzhou East offers broad rail choice; Hangzhou Station can create a more central start when a suitable service is available.

The best default search
Begin with Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station (上海虹桥站) to Hangzhou East Railway Station (杭州东站). This is a useful first search because both are major high-speed-rail hubs, but it is not automatically the best door-to-door choice.
Also check Shanghai Railway Station (上海站) and any useful train arriving at Hangzhou Railway Station (杭州站). A slightly longer or less frequent rail option can still produce the better trip when it removes a long transfer across either city.

Hangzhou's station names describe different hubs, not different translations of one place. Match the arrival to the hotel and the first half-day before comparing the train duration.

Plan the complete transfer
A useful comparison includes five blocks: hotel to the Shanghai station, station and security time, the train, the Hangzhou station exit, and the final transfer to the hotel or first attraction. The rail duration is often the smallest source of uncertainty.
- Check the Shanghai metro or driving route at the same time of day as the planned departure.
- Use the exact Chinese station name for ride-hailing and hotel assistance.
- Leave a buffer after arrival before a timed attraction or hotel appointment.
- If this is a day trip, book the return around a realistic final district rather than the idealized end of a checklist.
A focused Hangzhou day
Hangzhou can be visited as a long day from Shanghai, but it works better when the route chooses one lake section and one major experience beyond it. An overnight stay gives much more flexibility for weather and the distances between West Lake, Lingyin Temple, and the Longjing tea area.
Morning: arrive and choose one West Lake edge
Go to one planned starting point such as the Broken Bridge and Bai Causeway side or the southern lake area. Do not begin with the vague instruction to walk around the entire lake.
Midday: choose Lingyin or Longjing
Treat Lingyin Temple or the Longjing tea area as the second anchor. Attempting both on a short day adds transfers and removes the calm that makes either stop worthwhile.
Late afternoon: return to the lake or historic center
Use the remaining time for a compact lakeside walk, Hefang Street, a museum, or an early meal based on the departure station and weather.
Evening: travel to the exact return station
Hangzhou East, Hangzhou Station, and Hangzhou West require different city transfers. Re-check the ticket before starting the final journey and preserve the station-security buffer.
Day trip or overnight?
Choose a day trip when the goal is a focused introduction and the group is comfortable with an early start and a fixed return. Stay overnight when Lingyin, Longjing, several lake areas, nightlife, or a slower pace are important.
Whichever format you choose, organize the Hangzhou plan before selecting the final train. The itinerary should determine the station and return time, not the other way around.
