China travel gets much easier when the essential accounts and backups are prepared before arrival. The aim is not to download everything; it is to cover the moments when payment, transport, maps, or ticket details would otherwise stop the day.
The practical app stack
Most visitors need tools for six jobs: payments, ride-hailing, local maps, intercity tickets, translation, and keeping the itinerary together. Install the smallest stack that covers those jobs, then test the account or card setup before you depend on it.

If you want the minimum setup
Start with one payment app, one ride option, one local navigation option, one ticketing option, and one translation backup. Add a second payment app only after the first is working, because two untested accounts are not better than one reliable account.
1. Payments first
Register with the same identity details used on your passport, link an eligible international card, and keep another payment method available.
2. Rides and the hotel return
Confirm that ride-hailing opens correctly and save the hotel name, Chinese address, and phone number outside the ride app.
3. Maps and Chinese search
Practice finding one real stop by its Chinese name in AMap or your chosen local map before the trip.
4. Tickets and translation
Enter passport names exactly, download offline language support, and screenshot the first train or attraction confirmations.
Where travelers still get stuck
Installing an app is not the same as having a working travel setup. Card verification may fail, a social-media place name may not match the local listing, or a ticket may be attached to a slightly different passport spelling.
Test the complete action: open the app, confirm the account, search a real destination, and check that the payment or booking method is available. Keep the information you need to recover — hotel address, booking number, passport name, emergency contact — somewhere that does not depend on the same app.
- Keep your home SIM able to receive bank or identity verification messages if possible.
- Do not assume that merchant payments and person-to-person transfers have the same rules.
- Use the official 12306 site or app when you want the railway's direct booking channel.
- Re-check fees, card support, and feature availability shortly before travel.
What to keep offline
Save the first hotel address, arrival transport, important tickets, emergency contacts, and a small set of Chinese phrases. A screenshot is not elegant, but it remains useful when roaming, a login, or an app update fails at the wrong moment.
